Australia Wedge-Tailed Eagle

Perth Mint began a new bullion series featuring the Australian Wedge Tailed Eagle in 2014. The Wedge Tailed Eagle is Australia's largest bird of prey and one of the world's largest eagles. The series is scheduled for yearly issues similar to the Koala and Kookaburra series.

The coins in the series were designed by John Mercanti, the chief engraver of the United States Mint from 2006-2010. The same design was used on coins from 2014/2015 and again in 2016/2017. Beginning in 2018, a different design has been used for each issue. Unlike the older Australian series, the Wedge-Tailed Eagle is only available in 1 Oz sizes in silver with a $1 denomination. Australia did produce 1/10 Oz gold coins from 2016-2018. The coins are minted with .999 pure silver from 2014-2016. From 2017 on, .9999 pure silver planchets were used. Production has mostly been capped at a maximum mintage of 50,000. Only the issues from 2015-2017 were "unlimited".

The obverse design changed in the middle of the series. The 5th generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley was used from 2014-2017. That design changed in 2018 to the new sixth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The Jody Clark design showcases the Queen wearing the Royal Diadem crown, earrings, and the Victorian coronation necklace. Notably, this is the first Australian coin effigy of the Queen to include her neckline and shoulders in the portrait since 1966. On issues from 2020 forward, the Perth Mint has a micro-engraved letter within the design that is only visible under magnification.
