1969 1 Oz Krewe of Nereids Doubloon BU

Rare doubloon commissioned by the Krewe of Nereids. The Krewe of Nereids is the oldest all-female Krewe on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It was established in 1966 and the first parade was held in 1967. 

Obverse: The entire obverse is taken up stylized carnival imagery and decorations. The text at the top reads "CARNIVAL IN RIO". The date of "1969" is offset to the lower right.

Reverse: The reverse features the insignia of the Krewe of Nereids.  It depicts two mermaids in front of a large shell emblazoned with sea horses. Two crowns are shown on either side of the shell. The name "KREWE OF NEREIDS" is engraved at the top. The text at the bottom left reads "MARDI GRAS" while the bottom right denotes the location of "WAVELAND, MISS.". 

Edge: The edge is reeded but contains a smooth surface at the bottom bearing the purity and content of ".999 F.S.".
